Volunteer opportunities: shed and plot prep

Saturdays in July! Join us for two volunteer opportunities

As you may be aware we got a shed delivered to the garden. This is exciting, but there is a lot of work to be done before we can begin using it. We also have some work to do spreading dirt and preparing the north end of the garden and the south-western most 20x20' plot for native plants and pollinators.

This Saturday, and following Saturdays in July, there will be volunteer opportunities to lend a hand. Saturdays, from 10 to whenever, join us at the garden to spread dirt and mulch and help build a foundation for the shed.

Note: if you can't make the volunteer events, that's okay. You can help out whenever it's convenient for you. If you have questions, please reach out to the Mounds Park Volunteer Committee

Here are some of the tasks to tackle

  • Building the shed foundation

    • Most or all of the tasks are pretty well defined in this video

    • Move the shed into place (using jacks, rollers, skids, and people pushing the thing)

  • Native plant and pollinator areas (in the North and plot 25 in the southwest) we'll need to:

    • Pull as many weeds as possible

    • Bush-whack the larger vegetation

    • Hand-till the plot (not the north end)

    • Remove plastic tape and shipping stickers from cardboard lay down cardboard (to suppress weeds)

    • Cover the bed of cardboard with dirt

    • Cover the dirt with mulch

Things to bring

  • Snacks and water

  • Wear work clothes

  • Shovels, landscaping rakes, clippers or loppers (though we have a lot at the garden already)

  • Wheelbarrow or garden carts

Log your volunteer hours

Misty and Angie set up an easy to use form to track your volunteer hours. Now, it’s super easy to log your hours, even if you put in just 15 minutes of general work, it all adds up. Thank you so much for helping out, let’s make sure you get credit for service hours!
